This piece was inspired by my paternal grandmother, who served as the First Lady of the church she and my grandfather founded. I wanted the background to reflect the complexities of both her life and the world she navigated. Religion is often presented in black and white terms, yet many of the people who teach and uphold those beliefs have lived lives shaped by nuance.
